Verna M. Johnson

Verna M. Johnson, 89, of New London, died July 6, 2023, at her home near New London.  Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. July 13 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Visitation was 5-8 p.m. July 12 at the Harvey Anderson and Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the service at church.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery near Foley.

Verna Mildred Johnson was born July 7, 1933, on the family farm near Foley, the daughter of Art and Mable (Johnson) Danielson. She grew up in Foley where she graduated from Foley High School in 1951.  She continued her education at beauty college in Minneapolis. On Aug. 8, 1953, Verna was united in marriage to Harley Johnson in Ronneby.  They made their home in Minneapolis and Sauk Rapids before moving to Willmar in 1968 where she worked as a hairdresser at a Christian nursing home and later Rice Care Center. They moved to New London in 1974 and she retired in 1991. Verna and Harley were able to share in 69 years of marriage before his death Aug. 5, 2022.

Verna was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. She enjoyed canning, making jelly, gardening, puzzles, going to garage sales, playing the piano and organ, playing bingo and traveling with Harley in their retirement.    

Verna is survived  by two daughters, Robin Johnson of Atwater and Jill (and Lonnie) Abbott of St. Joseph; three grandchildren, Derrick (and Jodi) Johnson of Atwater, Ross (and Michelle) Johnson of Atwater, Jeff (and Nicole) Johnson of Lake Lillian; eleven great-grandchildren, Tyler (and Elizabeth) Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Brent Johnson, Riley Johnson, Gabe Johnson, Gabby Lawver, Steven Lawver, Travys Lawver, Brayden Johnson, Payton Johnson and Jaelynn Johnson; and one great-great-grandson, Oliver Johnson, numerous  nieces, nephews; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley; great-granddaughter, Kara Johnson; brothers, Myron and Dale, infant brother, Arthur and her parents.

The family would like to thank Sue Lundberg for the exceptional and loving care she provided Verna the last few years.
